There is a noticeable gap in the presence of a systematic and methodologically sound journal on the history of civilization in our country. In other words, there is no journal in Iran with this title and approach to civilization, history, and theorizing about civilizations, nor is there a similar journal published outside Iran. While there are journals dedicated to Iranian and Islamic history and civilization, the “Research Journal of the History of Civilization” seeks to operate in two distinct and differentiated domains from other scholarly journals: First, it emphasizes theoretical approaches to civilization, encompassing a broad spectrum of historical, philosophical, and sociological viewpoints from around the world—an area that has been lacking in Iranian academic journals. This approach will encourage Iranian researchers, professors, and students to engage more seriously with the foundations of civilizational discourse, both Eastern and Western, from antiquity to the present. Second, it focuses on research related to the great civilizations of the world and their interactions, many of which have had extensive and significant connections with Iranian civilization throughout history.
The absence of a theoretical and civilizational approach to history has led to the continuation of traditional studies, with little room for interdisciplinary or comprehensive intra-disciplinary research. This journal, due to the inclusive nature of the civilizational topic, can offer such an opportunity. Additionally, for over 90 years, historical research has moved beyond the confines of short-term political and military history, delving into the deeper layers of societal transformations with the aid of various other branches of the humanities and social sciences.
